Hearing Aid Maintenance

When you have your hearing aids fitted, you will receive several tools to assist with maintenance. These include wax guards, cleaning wire, brush, and wax pick. It’s important that you clean your hearing aids regularly. We will show you how to clean your hearing aids at your fitting.

Quick Fix

If your hearing aids have a distorted sound, please check that you have inserted the battery correctly. Remove the battery, clean the contacts and battery surface, and reinsert. You may also have moisture in your hearing aids, so we suggest you purchase a hearing aid dehumidifier or bring to our clinic so we can put them in our dry chamber.

Tips

  • Keep your hearing aids clean by wiping daily with a dry cloth or tissue.
  • Remove ear wax as this can cause temporary malfunction.
  • Avoid getting your hearing aids wet (for example, wearing them in the shower or heavy rain). If your hearing aids are exposed to moisture or very humid conditions, remove the batteries, and place the hearing aids in a dry storage kit. Never use a hair dryer or microwave oven to attempt to dry them.
  • Avoid chemicals such as aftershave lotion, hairspray, oils, and perfume. They contain chemicals which can have detrimental effects on your hearing aids. Always remove your hearing aids before applying these products and allow time for the product to dry before putting your hearing aids back in.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures by not exposing your hearing aids to heat such as leaving them in a car on our hot summer days.
  • Use hearing aid dryers or crystals to remove moisture (ask us about available products)
  • Visit us for a monthly hearing aid clean.

Hearing Aid Batteries & Battery Rechargers

We recommend that batteries and battery rechargers be stored in a dry place at room temperature. To improve performance, please open the battery compartment when you are not wearing your hearing aids at night (this does not apply to rechargeable hearing aid batteries).

Ear wax removal

We sell a safer alternative to cotton buds in our store. CleanEars wax removal spray is applied via a non-intrusive spray nozzle to prevent ear plugging. This spray is a 2-in-1 solution that both dissolves impacted cerumen (earwax) and irrigates the ear canal.

Our staff are also trained to remove ear wax in our clinic using microsuction. This technique uses a tiny vacuum which has a gentle vacuum to remove ear wax.

Our staff can advise if you are eligible to make an appointment for ear wax removal.
